We haven't wrote in a while, so I'll use this space to update you on our new product ranges...

After many requests for dark dens, we have launched a new range of 'Sensory Blackout Dens' and 'Sensory Whiteout Dens' alongside 'Sensory Ball Dens.' These are very popular for exploring UV & other sensory products where space is limited. They are easy to assemble- they simply pop-up!

We have also added a new 'Themed' range to our website. These themed corners create an attractive area for the classroom or for use at home. Most include a corner shaped themed rug, co-ordinating soft floor cushions, and a highly tactile stimulating wall display panel with velcro toys. Themes include town and transport, bugs n butterflies, all sorts of emotion and under the sea. (please see picture)

We have also launched Giant soft floor cushions to compliment our existing range of sensory bean bags. These cushions are ideal for use in our themed corners, soft play rooms or sensory rooms where you want to create a theme. The Under the sea range, includes starfish, octopus, clams, crabs and whale shaped cushions. The bugs n butterflies includes ladybirds, sunflowers, butterflies and bees.

For example if you wanted to create a sensory room with a background theme of 'underwater adventures' you could couple a few of the giant cushions with our 'under the sea' projector package or 'coral reef' max effect projector package. You could have pale blue wall padding with a few of our 'Florence the Fish' 1.2m square mats. You could compliment the range with our 'Submarine panels of play' to create a tactile, stimulating corner. And top it all off with a sensory room staple- a bubble tube, or bubble panel. New Portable 'Bubble Tube'

Total Sensory have designed a new product that is becoming very popular in Care Homes throughout the UK. Their portable Fiesta Tube is a column 1.5 metre in height, with hundreds of colour changing fibres arranged in rosette patterns of various shapes and sizes.

The fibres are arranged inside the column and can be seen from any angle. The Fiesta Tube also comes with a remote control, so the user can select colour change or pause on colour features.

Care Home's are favourable of this product due to its uniqueness and portability- we can design the tube with a cushioned plinth and casters so that it can be easily moved from room to room or put away when not in use.

Conventional 'Bubble Tubes' have been around for many years, and create wonderful effects, however some maintenance is required as the tube needs to be refilled or 'topped up' and also needs regular drops of BCB anti-bacterial fluid. Every so often, the tube also needs draining and it cannot be moved once in position. Some Care Homes have dedicated Sensory Rooms therefore this set-up suits them fine, however for smaller units, a portable item is required- this is where the Fiesta Tube is useful.

Total Sensory Expand their Multi- Sensory Product Range

After the success of our portable sensory boxes and new version of the bubble tube- the fiesta tube, Total Sensory have added some more new products to their range. These include;

UV Sparkle Fibre Harnesses - We have sourced the best fibre to create the most sparkly and brightest effect possible. The fibres are polymer not glass, so they won't break or snap. Combined with our 50W lightsource and a UV lightsource (of any kind) the effects are outstanding. The fibres themselves are an array of multi-colours including pink, red, green, yellow, orange, blue and purple.

Interactive Bubble Panels - Following the success of our traditional bubble tubes and fiesta tubes we have now launched a panel version. This comes with a remote control for operating the colour change and is 1m, 1.5m or 2m in height. As the column of water is thin it results in more bubbles that have more shape and detail than the traditional column tubes can create.

A Range of Sensory Dens - Ideal if space is at at premium and you need a very dark area to play with multi-sensory equipment. Ideal for classrooms or to create a sensory room on a budget

Musical Footnotes - At the TES Special Needs exhibition we were asked to provide more products with sound, so we now have the musical footnotes- simply press or step on them to create notes C to -C.

Objects of Reference - At only £10.99 this product was developed after talks with teachers to find way to convey to the deaf-blind children that they were about to 'go to the sensory room.' Total Sensory created this small bundle of handheld fibre with a base to hold to illustrate special meaning without the need to convey words.

How to Equip a Sensory Room
The definition of Multi-Sensory is:

"Pertaining to the integration of information from different sensory modalities"

Under this definition, a sensory room or area should incorporate as many different sights, sounds, colours and stimulation as possible. A multi-sensory 'room' need not take up a whole room; a corner or a small space can be utilised.

Sensory Rooms are used for people with autism, and other developmental disabilities, dementia and brain injury.

White rooms, Dark rooms and even UV rooms are common terms for similar rooms, coined from the fact that sensory rooms are normally enclosed in a black or white background to best show the effects created. Little research is available to confirm either white or black as the colour of preference for sensory rooms.

Traditionally, white rooms reflect light promoting a sense of coolness. The white room is rather like a blank canvas upon which a colourful rainbow of lights, shapes and images are projected. Soft floor mats, beanbags and cushioned seating are often used. Calming Bubble Tubes and Projectors are some of the key pieces. Liquid projectors are popular, as are scenes, such as underwater adventures. Soft colour changing pieces are incorporated such as Sparkle Sensory Harnesses, Jelly Fibre Harnesses and different portable sensory boxes.

In contrast, black rooms appear brightly colourful and stimulating. Although utilising the same products, the only difference is that black doesn't reflect the light so brightly coloured items against a black surface become easier to identify. UV light is also used in black rooms. Products include fibre optic carpet and mats, portable sensory boxes, liquid projectors, soft play rockers and bubble tubes.

Update on our Sensory Equipment:

Well, our range has almost doubled in size over the last few months- some of our new sensory equipment includes a bulls-eye portable sensory box, fibre optic rugs and carpets, adult sized bean bags, fibre optic cascade, objects of reference fibre and lots of new social play equipment including the mega 4 in line game!

Our website has also been updated with new pictures after a little visitor came to our sensory room and was (at first) overjoyed with all the fibre optic sensory equipment on display and then after half hour or so it begun to tire her out.. that or staring at the star ceiling was taking effect!

She particularly warmed to our interactive bubble tube, and sparkle curtain sensory box.

DCSF announces extra £12.5 million for disabled childrens childcare

"30 December 2009
Parents with disabled children will now get better support to help with childcare following a £12.5 million cash boost from the Government, Ed Balls and Children’s Minister Dawn Primarolo announced today as they also called on local authorities to do more to help disabled children access childcare.
The cash injection will fund the national roll out of the Disabled Children’s Access to Childcare Programme, following ten successful pilots across the country. The programme will help parents of disabled children, who are understandably cautious about using childcare, benefit from expert advice and support when choosing services for their child.
As part of the programme, ‘Parent Champions’, who are parents in the local area who have experience of using childcare for their own disabled children, could help other parents understand the services and support available to them. The champions would be recruited by local authorities across the country to promote the new services to other parents. They will give parents greater confidence in making the most of the services available, and ensure they have someone to turn to discuss any concerns they may have.
The £12.5 million fund is being allocated across the country, with the remaining 142 local authorities who were not part of the pilot each receiving at least £59,000.
Local authorities will have flexibility to use the funds to meet local needs, choosing from a range of options developed by the ten pathfinders. These include creating the ‘Parent Champions’ as well as providing specialist training for childminders and staff so that they have the skills they need to work with disabled children. It could also be used to produce better information for parents of disabled children so they are more aware of the options available to them."
